Scratches and cracks in the shell of your hot tub can be very annoying. While you might not notice them visually if they’re below the water line, they could still scratch you while bathing – and in some cases could even become a safety issue.

So, if your hot tub is scratched or cracked, read on to find our guide on how to get it sorted. Luckily, most scratches or shallow cracks can be fixed fairly easily, and you may even be able to do it yourself. But, if you’re not up to it, it’s worth speaking to the pros, like BMS Spas, who will be able to help.

What to do if your hot tub is leaking

Before we go any further, it’s important to take some time to talk about what you should do if your hot tub is actually leaking, rather than just cracked or scratched. Hot tub leaks can be dangerous as water and electricity don’t mix! So it’s important to speak to a professional to get a leak sorted, as they can be tricky to hunt down and even more difficult to get sorted.

How to fix hot tub cracks and scratches: the materials you need

To fix cracks or scratches in your hot tub, you’ll need a few things. Do bear in mind that these materials and instructions are only for cracks and scratches on the shells of acrylic hot tubs. If you’ve got a scratch on a wooden outer cover for example, you’ll need to follow guides on filling cracks in wood from a carpenter.

So, for an acrylic scratch or crack repair, get your hands on the following:

• Some cloths/wipes
• Hot tub plastic repair kit (car scratch removers can work too)
• Sandpaper (ideally fine or extra fine grade)

How to fix hot tub cracks and scratches: step by step

Once you’ve got all of the materials you’ll need, just follow these few simple steps to fix your hot tub crack or scratch.

Drain the hot tub

The first thing to do is to drain your hot tub and ensure that it’s properly dry. You can’t work on scratches or cracks if the surrounding area is still wet, or even damp, so wipe your spa dry with a towel or cloth and pay special attention to the damaged area, as any water left in the scratch could cause the repair to not work.

Fixing a scratch

If you’ve just got a small scratch in your spa, it’s fairly easy to fix. Just follow the instructions on your plastic repair kit to apply a bit of the material to the scratch. Then, let it dry out thoroughly. To finish, simply sand and buff it to bring the whole area back to a smooth finish.

Fixing a crack

If the crack is deeper, you may need to use a drill to ensure the crack is a nice V shape – essentially by widening out the edges closest to the surface. Once you’ve done this, you can apply the patch material as you would for a shallower scratch. Following this, let it dry out, sand out and buff it.

Speak to a professional

While you might be able to repair your hot tub yourself, it can be a tricky process, especially for a deeper crack. If you don’t feel comfortable undertaking this work yourself, it’s worth speaking to a professional. They’ll be able to diagnose the exact issue, verify that the damage isn’t causing a leak, and then professionally fix the scratch or crack so it’ll look as good as new!
